Christmas Cards for Soldiers

FAQs
  • What is the Holiday Mail for Heroes Program?
The Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program enables Americans to “Give Something That Means Something” this holiday season. We are inviting the public to send cards of thanks, encouragement and holiday cheer to members of our U.S. Armed Forces, veterans and military families, many of whom will be far away from home this holiday season.
  • Cards are not addressed to anyone specific, so who gets these cards?
Participating Red Cross chapters will determine how to best distribute cards to service members, veterans and family members in their local communities, across the nation and around the world. Cards may be delivered individually, included in care packages or displayed at common venues in military installations and hospitals.
  • Will my card be distributed to our troops stationed overseas?
Cards are distributed to hundreds of locations domestically and around the world, including military installations, military and VA medical facilities and veterans organizations. Please understand that it is difficult to determine which cards will be sent overseas and which will be sent domestically.

  • When addressing your card--Dear Service Member, Veteran, or Military Family Member”
  • Be sure to use the hashtag #holidaymail.

Ink Blot

Ink Blot Art

Thirteen Ways of Looking at an Inkblot
  1. Look at the positive shapes, or the ones made by the ink and water.
  2. Look at the negative shapes, or the white around and inbetween the shapes made by the ink and water.
  3. Look for repeated shapes.
  4. Look for the things that are symmetrical in your inkblot. Does that symmetry remind you of other symmetrical things in your life?
  5. What kinds of marks have you made? Long and thin, fat and blobby?
  6. What is the action like in the inkblot? Is it fast and splashy? Slow and contemplative?
  7. Is this a heavy inkblot or a light one? Is it cloud-like or as heavy and bold.
  8. Do you see two things side by side or facing each other?
  9. Do you see one thing facing you?
  10. Where is this inkblot? Does it look like it could be in the water? In the air? Buried deep in the ground?
  11. Is this inkblot loud? Or quiet?
  12. Is this inkblot hot or cold?
  13. Turn the inkblot upside-down, and answer all these questions again.

Space Paintings!

For out next project we will be using watercolor and masked liquid to create the illusion of space!

Research
--You need to add a narrative to your space drawing
--Example--Goldfish swimming in space
--It DOES NOT need to be realistic

Steps
--Find an image to work off of
-- Create a WASH on your paper--VERY LIGHT
--Sketch the object or ideas you want to be in your space painting

Watercolors are all about LAYERS! It takes a long time to build up colors. It is important that you always mix colors! You cannot put just one color down to fill a space!

Drawing From Observation

Contour Line Drawings
Contour line drawing is a technique to help develop observational drawing skills by simplifying objects into lines. A traditional contour line drawing is ONE continuous line to make up a subject.

Line Weight Example
Blind Contour Line Drawings
Is the same as above... without looking down at your paper.

Tips for drawing from observation
--Measure!-Compare proportions to other parts of your drawing.
--Look for basic shapes--cone-cube-sphere-cylinder
--Line weight variation--the thickness of your line will help determine how far back something is in visual space.

Bring in a small object to Draw. No bigger then the palm of your hand!Object must have detail! If you don't bring something you will be stuck drawing something of mine..

Perspective Drawing Day 2

Today we will continue to explore perspective drawing. You will be drawing your name in two point perspective.

*You need to have AT LEAST 7 letters-- If you have a short name include your last name
*One horizon line- Your letters will go over the horizon line
*Sketch out your name and see what letter will fall in the middle to help plan
*Use PENCIL! I would be surprised if you didn't have to start over at least once.
*USE YOUR RULER FOR ALL LINES!

Perspective Drawing

  • Perspective-Perspective drawing is a technique used to represent three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional surface (paper)
  • Vanishing Point-the point on the horizon line where parallel lines appear to meet.
  • If you look along a straight road, the parallel sides of the road appear to meet at a point in the distance. This point is called the vanishing point
